Alpine Lumber Co., Westminster, Colo., has purchased five lumberyards from Las Vegas, Nev.-based A.C. Houston Lumber Co., Alpine president Bill Miller confirmed Monday, April 7. The stores are in Angel Fire, Gallup and Farmington, N.M., and in Crested Butte and Durango, Colo. Financial details weren't disclosed. More

That's why Lang, president of Lang Building Supply in Brunswick, Ga., was surprised by the way he heard a customer was unhappy with deck handrailing he had purchased. Lang didn't get news of a problem until five months after the sale, when his credit card processor pulled from the LBM's account the $26,000 paid for the deck package. More

Talk about putting your money where your mouth is. Like many dealers nationwide, Kuiken Bros. Lumber of Fair Lawn, N.J., uses co-op dollars to support promotional mailings. But for years, Kuiken Bros. also has held what Ryan Mulkeen, director of marketing at the seven-yard dealer, calls "beefsteak dinners" for its builder-customers, at which a sponsoring supplier makes a presentation. It recently held four of these dinners, attended by nearly 900 builders, which door manufacturer Masonite supported through Bridgewater Wholesalers, its local wholesaler. More
