Mass timber construction is gaining traction and support at a rapid rate in the U.S. There are mass timber buildings in Portland, Ore., Minneapolis, Minn., Atlanta, and a proposed 80-story high-rise in Chicago. Advocates of mass timber construction argue the method can transform construction from a source of carbon emissions into a carbon sink. Yale Environment 360 analyzes these environmental claims, and also whether the logging and manufacturing required to produce mass timber outweighs the benefits.
