ATLANTA -- Georgia-Pacific Corp. and Roseburg Forest Products Co. have signed an agreement for the sale of Georgia-Pacific's Holly Hill, S.C., medium density fiberboard facility. This brings to seven the number of Georgia-Pacific industrial wood products mills Roseburg will purchase. In addition to Holly Hill, the company will acquire mills located at Eupora, Louisville, Oxford and Taylorsville, Miss.; Russellville, S.C.; and Vienna, Ga.
"Roseburg Forest Products has been determined to enter the MDF business for some time now, and this acquisition gives us the opportunity to meet one of our objectives," said Allyn C. Ford, president of Roseburg. "As with the other six mills we have agreed to acquire from Georgia-Pacific, we found the Holly Hill facility to be very well managed and cared for, with excellent people."
"Over the years, Holly Hill has been a key component of our composite panel business," said Mike Rehwinkel, Georgia-Pacific's president-wood products. "Since it supplies product to the Oxford thermally fused melamine facility, we know it will complement the strategy Roseburg has for its particleboard business."
Both sales agreements are expected to be completed by Dec. 1. They will make Roseburg one of the largest manufacturers of composite panel products in the United States. Roseburg plans to hire the vast majority of the existing employees.
Built in 1974, the Holly Hill facility produces medium density fiberboard panels used for furniture, cabinetry and decorative molding. Customers include panel laminators, cabinet makers, major home improvement retailers and regional building products suppliers.
Georgia-Pacific has owned the facility since 1982. The site has about 120 employees and is a part of the company's Wood Products division that produces plywood, lumber, composite panels, engineered lumber and oriented strand board.
Roseburg Forest Products Co., based in Roseburg, Ore., is a family-owned manufacturer of lumber, particleboard, softwood plywood, engineered wood products and specialty panels. It has land and facilities in California, Montana and Oregon. The company was established in 1936.
Headquartered at Atlanta, Georgia-Pacific is one of the world's leading manufacturers and marketers of tissue, packaging, paper, pulp, and building products and related chemicals. The company employs approximately 50,000 people at more than 300 locations in North America, South America and Europe.
