Builders FirstSource (BFS) purchased the assets of Michigan-based John’s Lumber. John’s lumber operates two locations serving the greater Detroit metropolitan statistical area, the No. 41 ranked single-family market in the country and home to nearly half of the starts completed in Michigan annually, according to BFS.
John’s Lumber was founded in 1947 and has remained family-owned and operated during its entire lifespan. The company supplies lumber and sheet goods, windows, millwork, siding, decking, kitchen and bath, and installation services to builders, remodelers, and retail consumers. The company reported annual revenue for the last 12 months of approximately $49 million.
“I’m happy to welcome Bill Brys and all of his team members to Builders FirstSource. John’s Lumber is known locally for having great people focused on providing high quality products and services to their customers,” BFS president and CEO Dave Flitman said in a prepared statement. “They will fit in very well with the people-first culture of our company.”
Flitman said the John’s acquisition will provide scale to benefit BFS’s 14 current locations across Michigan and allow for expansion in the company’s value-added product offerings. He said BFS will continue to pursue “accretive tuck-in” acquisitions that create value for the company and its customers.
“My dad’s philosophy was simple - treat customers right, and they will return time after time. Having grown up in and around the business, it was a very difficult decision for my siblings and me to sell the company,” Mike Aggeler, a family owner and board member of John’s Lumber said. “Builders FirstSource understood the needs of our family and was very easy to work with throughout the process. We care deeply about our employees and community. I’m convinced Builders FirstSource is the right home for our people, providing them with access to the resources and growth opportunities that will ensure their continued success in supporting our customers.”
Dallas-based BFS operates in 40 states with approximately 550 locations and has a market presence in 47 of the top 50 and 86 of the top 100 MSAs. The company provides value-added products such as roof and floor trusses, wall panels, stairs, vinyl windows, custom millwork and pre-hung doors. BFS also distributes dimensional lumber and lumber sheet goods, millwork, windows, interior and exterior doors, and other building products. The company completed its merger with BMC in January.
