Schoeneman's Building Materials Center, the six-unit dealer based in Sioux Falls, S.D., isn't showing any signs of slowing down. Despite a lagging housing market, the dealer is pushing forward with a new 20-acre facility in Harrisburg, S.D.

The new location will replace a five-acre yard in downtown Sioux City and host 20,000-square-feet of office space along with 150,000 square-feet of materials and storage. Of the dealer's six locations, two are within Sioux City.

"We've been planning this for a long time," owner Al Schoeneman tells ProSales senior editor Andy Carlo. Schoeneman also said that the new location will allow for deliveries via rail service.

While some dealers are selling off their businesses or have closed altogether in tough times, Schoeneman says business remains steady in his region. About 80% of total sales are to pros; 70% are builders, and remodeler sales make up 30% of pro revenue.

"Business isn't too bad here," Schoeneman says. "We don't have the real highs like other parts of the country, but we don't have the real lows, either."

The new facility is before the Harrisburg Planning and Zoning Commission. Schoeneman hopes to have it up and running by next year.
