America’s seventh-biggest pro dealer and what used to be The Home Depot’s commercial building supply venture soon will have the same owner. The private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice (CD&R) is adding to its portfolio Roofing Supply Group (RSG) of Dallas, No. 7 on this year’s ProSales 100. CD&R’s deal with RSG’s current owner, The Sterling Group, should close this quarter.

CD&R already owns HD Supply, an industrial distribution company now focused on the energy, public works, and commercial repair businesses. A few years ago, it also made a bid to go big as a pro dealer, buying yards primarily in Florida and Georgia. But Home Depot shareholders forced the company to shed all of HD Supply and focus on retail. HD Supply eventually sold its lumberyards to ProBuild, which closed some for efficiency reasons and most of the others as the new-home construction market withered.

Roofing Supply Group is true to its name in that it focuses on selling various types of roofing, but it also stocks decks, decorative stone, cement siding, plywood, and particleboard. Its 59 locations in 24 states racked up $934 million in sales last year, 95% of them to pros.

Several other deals also hit the news wires in April. Among them:

Big C Lumber, Granger, Ind., expanded into Ohio for the first time by acquiring Lutterbein Lumber of Edgerton.

Holmes Lumber, a division of Kent, Ohio-based Carter Lumber, bought DSD Builders Supply in Canton, Ohio, and reopened the store under the Holmes Lumber-Canton name.

SRS Acquisition of McKinney, Texas, acquired ABCO Supply, a Chesterfield, Mich.-based supplier of metal roofing products.

Masonite International acquired Algoma Hardwoods, a manufacturer of architecturally specified doors based in Algoma, Wis. Masonite also completed its acquisition of Baillargeon Doors.

Cedar Creek, a wholesale building material distributor in Oklahoma City, acquired Prime Hardwoods of Houston.

Bonsal American bought the TXI Package Products business of TXI Operations LP, a unit of Texas Industries. TXI Package’s product array includes dry mix concrete, cement, bulk mortar and private-label products. With the deal, Bonsal American acquired the Sakrete license for the state of Texas.

Alexandria Moulding, a millwork and molding manufacturer in Ontario, revealed it acquired Royal Woodworking, a maker of hardwood solid and custom moldings, boards, and stair components.

Meanwhile, Lumber Products Inc. of Tualatin, Ore., filed for protection from creditors under Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy code. Lumber Products has offices in six states.
