If you think concrete is tough, you should meet some of the guys who sell concrete and masonry products at Columbia, S.C.-based New South Construction Supply. Outside salesman Russ Lott and Sales Manager Jon Black have competed in Ironman Triathlons, which consists of a 2 1/2-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run, all done on the same day.
"The reason why I got involved with an Ironman is because it's the toughest thing you can do," said Black. "It's a challenge."
Controller and IT manager Jimmy Sobeck Jr. also competed in an Ironman competition in November. Sobeck chronicled his training and race preparation in a blog, which provided even more insight into what really goes into preparing for the grueling race.
"It has really helped me in my sales because my customers supported me through the whole thing and got behind me," Black said. "Now that's all they talk about."
Lott said he didn't do the triathlon with the intention of helping him make more sales, but rather for himself. He said his racing has not affected his sales at all. "I didn't get any orders because I did an Ironman, I'll put it that way," Lott said.
According to New South owner Jim Sobeck Sr., Black and Lott are two of the top salespeople at the company but still find time to coach their childrens' sports teams and are involved in their local communities.
