As part of a citywide initiative to reduce waste, Palo Alto, Calif., will ban contractors from demolishing entire buildings by July 2020 in order to promote the reuse of building materials, The Stanford Daily reports. Many contractors in the area already follow the practice, and since 2016 one in four houses that were taken down have been deconstructed rather than demolished.
