Beacon named Michelle Mulder, owner of Nailed It Roofing in North Bay, Ontario, Canada, as the winner of the company’s second annual North American Female Roofing Professional of the Year competition. The program is designed to highlight “inspiring women in the roofing industry across the U.S. and Canada,” according to Beacon.

“I’m grateful for the support I received from my local community and my colleagues,” Mulder said in a news release. “It’s an honor to receive this prestigious award. I applaud Beacon for its support of women in the industry and I hope my story inspires other women to become trailblazers.”

Mulder enrolled in the Renovation Techniques Construction Carpentry program at Canadore College after having difficulty being hired as a woman in construction after high school. Upon her graduation, Mulder was hired as a carpenter, framing houses and sheathing roofs. In 2015, Mulder started her own business, Nailed It Roofing.

“We were thrilled to receive hundreds of submissions demonstrating women’s impact on the roofing industry,” Julian Francis, Beacon’s president and CEO, said. “It’s a privilege to recognize Michelle for her hard work and determination in leading the way for women in the roofing sector. The public rallied to vote for Michelle, recognizing her work on the jobsite and her devotion to mentoring young women in the community.”

Beacon solicited nominations for female roofing professionals from March 8 through April 11 before opening voting to the public from May 16 through June 6. In addition to Mulder, the other finalists include Letitia Hanke of ARS Roofing and Gutters in Santa Rosa, Calif., Anna Arakelyan of United Roofing in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Christina Rodriguez of G Storm Solutions in Houston, Texas, and Robin Wright of V & R Roofing in Tacoma, Wash.

Stephanie Pouse, a partner at Brahma Roofing & Construction in Windsor, Co., was named as the winner of the inaugural North American Female Roofing Professional of the Year competition in 2021.

Herndon, Va.-based Beacon distributes roofing materials and complementary building products. The company operates over 500 branches throughout all 50 U.S. states and six Canadian provinces.
