BMHC Appoints New Executive Building Materials Holding Corp.(BMHC) appointed William M. Smartt as the company's senior vice president and CFO. Smartt, who assumed the post on April 1, has worked for 20 years as a chief financial and administrative officer for Fortune 500 companies, the company said, most recently as executive vice president and chief financial and administrative officer of DHL Worldwide Express.

Along with this change, BMHC's Ellis Goebel has been appointed senior vice president of business development and investor relations.

San Francisco–based BMHC (www.bmhc.com), which includes the BMC West and BMC Construction subsidiaries, had 2003 sales of $1.4 billion.

Universal Partners With Framer Universal Forest Products, the Grand Rapids, Mich.–based manufacturer and distributor of lumber and building materials, has purchased a 50 percent stake in Shawnlee Construction, a framing company based in Plainsville, Mass. According to a company announcement, the investment will allow Universal to supply material from its component plants in the Northeast and combine it with framing services, which will satisfy customer requests for turnkey construction packages in New England.

Universal Forest Products (www.ufpi.com) had $1.9 billion in sales in 2003 and operates 96 facilities in North America.

Carter Lumber Acquires Holmes Kent, Ohio–based Carter Lumber announced that it has acquired The Holmes Lumber and Building Centers, a three-yard chain based in Millersburg, Ohio. Carter Lumber will retain the names of the Holmes Lumber locations.

Founded in 1932, Carter Lumber (www.carterlumber.com) had 2003 sales of $570 million and operates 240 stores in 10 states.
