There are several different story lines here. One involves M&A activity by firms like Beacon Roofing and Central Network Retail Group. There's a startup story at NorCal Lumber, indications of rural weaknesses at Higginbotham and Mead, and growth attitudes at places like GMS and US LBM. On the downside, L&W Supply shrank the most because we're comparing 12 months' worth of revenue from 2015 with 10 months of 2016; that's because ABC Supply took over L&W on Oct. 31, 2016. And BMC's personnel decline comes in a year in which it merged with Stock Building Supply. By the way: The other big merger that took effect last year, involving BFS and ProBuild, produced no net change in staff, BFS reported.
