Discuss Showroom Topics, Get News and Ask Questions on ProSales’ New LinkedIn Page

ProSales has set up a website to serve as a home for showroom managers to get ideas on LBM showrooms, read relevant news and discuss concerns with other managers. It’s on LinkedIn, a networking site for business professionals. If you already use it, sign in and search for the “ProSales” group, then ask to join. If you’re not yet using LinkedIn, signing up is easy and free. The ProSales group page will be where we post stories, moderate discussions, and relay queries from fellow LBM managers. But please note: This page is for dealers only. Suppliers, distributors, and public relations folks will be denied entrance. That way, we hope the conversations will be focused and you’ll be able to speak freely.

How To Get Visitors To Go Where You Want? These Pros Have Advice

Showroom managers at a Minnesota lumberyard said customers would walk in the front door, see the start of the showroom to their right, visit it for a while, but never go through to the other end where the managers' desks are located. The showroom's managers asked: What can they do to keep customers from stopping short of where the managers work? Here's what you suggested.

Unique Flooring Products from the 2010 Surfaces Show

Among a sea of carpeting and wood flooring sameness, a collection of products stood out at the Surfaces show in Las Vegas. These offerings do not fit into neat little categories, but here are some of the themes from this year's show that are making a lasting impression: sustainable products, high-performance stains and mortars, and cool but affordable tiles:

Vinyl Windows Sport Better Looks and Performance

When vinyl window makers say "knock on wood," they aren't hoping for luck. Rather, they're aiming to knock wood off its spot at the top of the window material pyramid (or at least share the top) by offering higher-end options with improved durability and thermal performance.

Flooring Dealers Aim to Build Market Share in 2010

As if surviving three and a half years of recession weren’t hard enough, floor covering dealers face a host of new challenges—including heightened competition from big box retailers, a paucity of bank financing, and cash flow challenges—if they want to prosper in an improving 2010 economy. That was the message delivered by a keynote panel of industry experts at Surfaces 2010 in Las Vegas.

Flooring Industry Puts Recycled Materials to Work

Many flooring manufacturers have gone beyond merely using recycled content. They have developed technology to employ post-consumer waste--old carpets, soda bottles, drywall, and vinyl tiles--that would otherwise clog up landfills. More and more of them are substituting environmentally benign alternatives for caustic or toxic materials. And companies are much more transparent about their manufacturing processes.

 My Showroom

As the average age of a home in the area around Hutchison Lumber increased to 30 years, the company began seeing more remodels. However, the dealer’s products and services weren’t geared toward retail customers who wanted to browse through products. So, in 2006, the yard opened the Design Center in its Pine, Colo., location to attract these shoppers, and offer contractors a place to send their customers. View story.

 This Month's Question

Hutchison Lumber opened its Design Center to better serve remodeling and retail customers. Over the past couple years of the recession, the remodeling market has benefited from the tax credit and from homeowners staying in their houses longer. What steps have you taken to better serve the remodeling market? Tell us or share your thoughts on the ProSales LinkedIn page.
