NAHB Study Reveals Design Trends
The NAHB unveiled several new studies during February's International Builders' Show, including "The Home of the Future," a study of average and upscale home trends over the next eight years based on polls of architects, designers, marketers, and manufacturers. The survey found that the average home size is likely to remain in the range of today's 2,400 square feet, kitchens and baths will continue to be among the most important factors affecting buying choice, and there will be more focus on the garage, with more preference for three-car garages.
Some traits of the average home in 2015:
- One-story entry foyer.
- The living room will go away or be replaced by a parlor/retreat/library.
- Nine-foot ceilings on first floor; 8- or 9-foot ceilings on second floor.
- Front porch.
Some traits for the upscale home in 2015:
- Two-story entry foyer.
- Likely to have formal living room, but may be replaced by a parlor/retreat/library.
- Nine-foot ceilings on first floor; 9- or 10-foot ceilings on second floor.
- Two master bedroom suites.
- Outdoor kitchen; outdoor fireplace.
Pro-Build Announces Reorganization
Pro-Build Holdings is aligning its 10 divisions under four regions to "facilitate efficient operations across the company's national footprint." As part of the reorganization, announced March 12, Pro-Build named four regional presidents: Buddy Ables will be responsible for The Contractor Yard, Strober Building Supply, and U.S. Components for Pro-Build East; Dave Dittmer will oversee Spenard, Lumbermens, and Dixieline for Pro-Build West; Dale Kukowski will keep an eye on F.E. Wheaton and United Building Centers for Pro-Build North; and Jim Cavanaugh will manage Hope Lumber and Home Lumber for Pro-Build South. Pro-Build also revealed it is moving its headquarters to Denver.
Dixieline Lumber, a San Diego?based division of Pro-Build, announced March 1 the purchase of Sandstone Brick Co., a Bakersfield, Calif., operation with a truss manufacturing plant and a lumber distribution yard. ...SelectBuild Construction, the construction services division of San Francisco?based BMHC, has terminated its letter of intent to acquire Las Vegas roofing services provider Willis Roof Consulting. ...Portland, Maine?based hardlines distributor Emery-Waterhouse has purchased two-location specialty distributor Morgan Distribution Co. ...Universal Forest Products, a Grand Rapids, Mich.?based manufacturer and marketer of wood and wood-alternative products, has completed its acquisition of Aljoma Lumber, a wood preserver in Medley, Fla. ...Chicago-based manufacturer USG announced that its L&W Supply specialty distribution subsidiary has entered an agreement to acquire California Wholesale Material Supply, a $600 million distributor with 30 locations.
Peninsula Building Materials, a supplier of natural stone, brick, architectural, and fabricated materials, has opened a masonry design showroom in Mountain View, Calif. The 8,500-square-foot facility displays 300 varieties of natural stone, brick, and thin veneer. ...Huttig Building Products has closed its Hauppauge, N.Y., distribution center. The St. Louis?based distributor said the decision is part of its efforts to adjust the size of its infrastructure in light of the market downturn. ...Mooresville, N.C.?based Lowe's will open a 240,000-square-foot flat-bed distribution center on 23 acres in the Port of Stockton, Calif., during the first half of this year. ...Federal Way, Wash.?based forest products provider Weyerhaeuser announced Feb. 16 it will sell all of its Canadian distribution centers and 10 distribution centers in the U.S. The company said the areas affected will be served through independent LBM distributors and Weyerhaeuser's in-field sales and technical support teams. The company said it will retain its remaining network of 40 distribution centers in the U.S. ...The United States Gypsum Co. subsidiary of USG will open a new $220 million Sheetrock gypsum panel manufacturing plant in Stockton, Calif., in 2010.
Less than a week after leaving his COO position at Eighty Four, Pa.?based 84 Lumber, Bill Myrick was named senior vice president of strategic initiatives at Pro-Build Holdings. ...84 Lumber has appointed 14-year company veteran Mark Garboski, most recently vice president of purchasing, to executive vice president and to the company's board of directors. Brian Sento returns to the dealer as vice president of national sales. Mike McCrobie, an 84 employee since 1998, was named vice president of installed sales. ...BMHC has promoted director of infrastructure Hank Fitchett to vice president of infrastructure services. ...Peabody, Mass.?based distributor Beacon Roofing Supply has appointed president and CEO Robert Buck chairman of the board. Moving company United Van Lines' 30th annual "migration study," which tracked where its customers moved to and from during 2006, echoed other findings that Americans are heading to the West and the Southeast and are abandoning the Central Northeast. Based on the company's 227,254 interstate household moves, North Carolina was the top destination, with 64% of the state's moves being "inbound," followed by Oregon (62.5%) and South Carolina (60.6%). The highest "outbound" states were Michigan and North Dakota, with 66% of moves being outbound, New Jersey (60.9%), and New York (59.5%).
