On June 17, Michael Froman, U.S. trade representative, and Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s minister of international trade, announced in a joint statement that while no new softwood lumber agreement has been made, both countries have been " meeting intensively" and "have made significant advances in exploring the key issues and priorities" of both nations.

Both Froman and Freeland further agree that both parties will continue to work to an agreement:

The United States and Canada are committed to continuing negotiations in an effort to achieve a durable and equitable solution for North American softwood lumber producers, downstream industries and consumers.
