How big do homeowners want their next home to be? That could depend on their race and ethnicity, the National Association of Home Builders reports. The association last year surveyed 3,600 homeowners nationwide and found the entire group’s median desired-home size of 2,226 square feet was nearly on the mark for the median size of all homes completed during 2011 (2,233 square feet). But there was significant variation by race and ethnic background. The median for whites’ desired home—2,197 square feet—was slightly less than the entire group’s median, while African-Americans’ desired home (2,664 square feet) was nearly 20% larger than the median. Hispanics and Asians also were above the overall median, but not by as much.
