Huttig Building Products roughly broke even in terms of net income in the first quarter, improving from a $4 million net loss in the year-earlier period, the St. Louis-based distributor and millwork firm announced today.Sales rose 9% to $147.1 million.

“Considering the seasonal nature of our business and the impact that the extreme weather had on many of our operations in the first quarter, I am pleased to report Huttig’s first positive income from continuing operations in the first quarter in many years”, said Jon Vrabely, Huttig’s president and CEO. Income from continuing operations totaled $100,000 in the quarter, improving from an $800,000 loss in January to March 2014.

Also today, Simpson Manufacturing Co. posted net income of $10.1 million in the first quarter, down from $12.1 milloin a year earlier. Sales grew 4.9% to $176.5 million.
