Building materials co-op Do it Best Corp., Wednesday announced plans to construct a new Retail Service Center in Sikeston, Mo., replacing its distribution facility in nearby Cape Girardeau built in 1971.

Funded by a $30 million capital reinvestment, the 103-acre Sikeston site will comprise more than 550,000 square feet of warehousing space. Thanks to higher ceilings accommodating product shelving and storage, the new building will register a cubic footage increase of 40% over the former facility, the company says. The new space’s design will be guided by workflow-efficiency studies bent on enhancing safety and product movement, and will be tailored to use with the voice-pick ordering system now in operation at the Cape Girardeau branch.

“This investment – and the new facility it will create – will not only help us continue to meet our members’ current needs but will position us well for future growth plans,” said Bob Taylor, Do it Best president and CEO at a related press conference in Sikeson on Wednesday. He added that the new space offers room for expansion and fits company transportation needs while retaining proximity to Cape Girardeau, 45 miles north on the I-55 corridor.
