• Bruce Abel of Don Abel Building Supply in Juneau, Alaska, received the Western Building Material Association's 2011 Dealer of the Year award at the association's convention in early February. The award was presented by 2011 WBMA president Ed Waite, who works for ProBuild. The association also named Bill Mackie, of Madison Lumber in Ketchikan, Alaska, as its president for 2012.
• Sanford & Hawley president Bob Sanford received the ProSales Excellence Award for his company’s achievements in technology. ProSales editor Craig Webb presented the award to the Unionville, Conn.-based dealer on Jan. 25 during the Northeastern Retail Lumber Association’s LBM Expo.
• Cassity Jones Lumber, a Longview, Texas-based dealer, will consolidate its North Texas operations at its newly purchased 25-acre lumber distribution center in Terrell, Texas.
• The showroom floor at Beyond the Studs Building Supply, a dealer in Gorst, Wash., fell two feet last week after its supporting beams collapsed. No one was injured.
• Wilfred E. Gross, the founder of W.T. Harvey Lumber, based in Columbus, Ga., died on Jan. 25. He was 83.
