Yesterday, July 8, the LBM industry lost a longtime member when Berlin G. Myers, founder of Berlin G. Myers Corp. in Summerville, S.C., passed away. Born in 1917 in Knightsville, S.C., Myers started his own lumber company in 1939 and spent his entire career in the industry, stepping away only briefly to serve in World War II .
Myers was also elected mayor of Summerville in 1972 and held the position until he chose to step down in 2011, making him one of the longest-serving mayors in the state's history. His commitment to service carried over to his business; as president of Berlin G. Myers Lumber Corp, Myers strove to separate the store from the big box retailers and the company prided itself on giving customers a special experience.
In a 2007 interview with ProSales, his son, Berlin Myers Jr., commented on his father's dedication to serving the customer and demonstrating pride in the company's work. That dedication paid off: Last year, Berlin G. Myers Corp. celebrated its 75th anniversary.
Along with company president and mayor, Myers also served as the president of the Carolinas Building Material Association in 1975. After stepping down from his public office duties in 2011, Berlin would continue to serve as the president of Berlin G. Myers Corp.
