BYKO, Reykjavik, Iceland

When you're the editor of ProSales, you're editor all the time--even on vacation. So when I saw a branch of the BYKO lumberyard chain during my recent vacation in Iceland, I had to go inside. And what did I see? Waffles!

Iceland has just 320,000 residents spread over an island as big as Kentucky, so the country's two lumber distributors are as focused on retail as on the pro business. In look and feel, BYKO resembles a Home Depot or Lowe's. Except its idea of treating customers go beyond free coffee. On my Dec. 5 visit, the holiday sales were in full swing. In Iceland, the Yule season includes eating waffles with syrup, or with whipped cream if you prefer. That's quite a yummy variation from what U.S. dealers do.

If you're in the mood to offer waffles at your next weekend sales event, just remember to thank them for their business this year. If you prefer to use Icelandic, just say "Takk Fyrrir."
