ProBuild plans to close its stores in Montgomery and Chester, N.Y., and in Franklin, N.J., a spokesperson for the Denver-based LBM company said.

"We have 10 other facilities in this market from which we can effectively serve our customers and our commitment to this market remains strong," the ProBuild spokesperson said in a statement. "Some employees will be reassigned to our other facilities and those that are not will receive severance packages. We are continually evaluating how best to serve our customers in every market in which we operate and that we often make adjustments to achieve optimal footprints."

The spokesperson also stressed that "ProBuild in general is in a very aggressive acquisition mode and we continue to acquire companies across our national footprint."

ProBuild is the biggest LBM company in America. According to this year's ProSales 100, the operation had 563 locations as of the end of 2007 and 15,000 employees. Sales in 2007 fell 16.7% to $5 billion, 90% of which was to pros.
